There’s a pretty good little track a few hours away from me. Really considering getting into it. Seems like an awesome way to race competitively at a relatively low cost compared to say, racing full-sized cars.
Any out there racing them? How much does a season usually cost you? Are the engines pretty easy to work on?

I don’t do 125cc shifter but I do run a 100cc kart in a one off race weekend... I can try to answer some questions for you but yeah.

No racing but I used to borrow a friend’s shifter anytime I wanted.
It’s expensive. New, these types of kart go for 15000$ or so, used around 8000$, then they go through 300$ sets of tires like a knife through butter, then you have maintenance, trailer, broken stuff... etc. Not to mention that they are pretty much not raced in north america and you have to go to Europe to actually get proper races on it.
My first time in it...
Forgot to mention that they also won’t let you race Shifters without a lot of experience in Rotax Max or DD2 first... K9b shifters like the one I was driving are karts that go from 0 to 60mph in less than 3s and can reach with the proper gearing, speeds over 140mph... On the top of the striaght in that little video I posted of myself, you reach a speed around 105mph...

Running costs for ours consists of 110 octane race gas at $10.25/gal, $20 clutch oil bottles, and brake fluid. Our kart chassis is a 2013 Tony Kart Racer EVK we bought used this year for $2200. Our blueprinted single cylinder 2-stroke Yamaha KT100 from Comet Karts cost us $1850. Factor in safety gear like a $200 race suit, and $400 helmet as well. Then add in some money for spares because karts like to use up their parts. I had a clutch housing go and it bent the crankshaft on my engine (it was rather costly to fix).

Do you run it all yourself or do you have a few people that share?
I have a 11yo son that just has the freaking instinct. I would like to get him into it, but the ballooning costs freighten me

The worst part is the initial buy in. I am sponsored by the the dorm I live in, they gave me $7,000 to start a team this year. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/tag/purdue-gra…

Not cheap by any means. I used to race karts 10 years ago. Just a couple of examples. I needed new tires every weekend to be competitive. I’d run last weeks tire in the heats, and then buy a new set for the main. They were $88 a piece 10 years ago. My motor was $1800 and needed a refresh every 5-6 weekends (that cost almost $300). I got out of it so I could by a house.

Regret the username, to be honest. Just popped into my head and I made it my login.
Now if anything gets posted onto Jalopnik from Gawker or Jezebel and I comment I get hounded by SJWs.
Oh well.

Right? Doing trackdays in my car is cheaper (provided I don’t crash). Karting was a blast though. The sensations were as close as driving an F1 car as a regular person can get. Sitting a couple inches off the ground, carrying car speeds on something a quarter scale.
A lot of public karting places hold league nights. They aren’t as fast as true racing karts, but for a fraction of the costs you can just show up and race competitively. It’s usually 1 night a week for 10 plus weeks.

Yea, there’s a really solid place by me that does a Sunday Night Grand Prix for 50 bucks. 2 qualy rounds follows by a race from a stop.
Could do that once a month and have a lot of fun without fear of crashing thousands of dollars worth of my own gear.
I was also looking at getting a bike, but the fear of death from hooning a bike on the street has stopped that idea.
